The Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site, located in Hyde Park, New York, was the longtime home of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. The site was designated a National Historic Site in 1945 and is now managed by the National Park Service.
History
The Roosevelt family has been associated with the Hyde Park area since the mid-1700s. In 1867, Franklin D. Roosevelt’s grandfather, Warren Delano Jr., purchased the estate known as Springwood. After FDR’s election to the presidency in 1932, the Roosevelts made Springwood their primary residence.
The Roosevelts welcomed many notable visitors to Springwood over the years, including Winston Churchill, Charlie Chaplin, and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth of England. President Roosevelt died at Springwood on April 12, 1945; Eleanor Roosevelt continued to live there until her death in 1962.
Today, the Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site includes the Springwood estate as well as the nearby presidential library and museum. Visitors can tour the Roosevelt family home, visit the museum to learn about FDR’s life and legacy, and explore the grounds of the estate.
Exhibit and Programs
The Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site offers a variety of exhibits and programs that tell the story of the Roosevelts and their time at Springwood. The site’s museum features exhibits on FDR’s life, his presidency, and the history of the estate. Visitors can also take a self-guided tour of the Roosevelt family home, which includes furnished rooms and personal belongings of the Roosevelts.
The Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site also offers a variety of educational programs for students, teachers, and families. These programs include ranger-led tours, Junior Ranger activities, and living history demonstrations.
Location and Hours
The Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site is located in Hyde Park, New York, about 80 miles north of New York City. The site is open daily from 9:00am to 5:00pm; the Roosevelt family home and museum are closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day.
Admission to the site is free; however, there is a fee for tours of the Roosevelt family home.
