History
The Locust Grove Estate was built in 1797 by Revolutionary War hero Colonel Henry Beekman. Beekman was a native of New York City and the son of Dutch immigrants. He served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War and was later elected to the New York State Assembly. In 1797, Beekman purchased land in Poughkeepsie and began construction on the Locust Grove Estate. The estate consisted of a large stone mansion, several outbuildings, and extensive grounds. The mansion was completed in 1800 and the Beekman family moved in shortly thereafter.
The Locust Grove Estate remained in the Beekman family for over 150 years. During that time, several additions and changes were made to the property. In 1853, a second story was added to the mansion. A new wing was also added in 1871. In 1955, the estate was donated to the Dutchess County Historical Society. The society opened the estate to the public as a museum and historic site.
Today, the Locust Grove Estate is one of Poughkeepsie’s most popular tourist attractions. Visitors can tour the mansion, grounds, and outbuildings. The estate also hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including concerts, lectures, and exhibitions.
