Franny Reese State Park is a 585-acre (237 ha) state park located in Newburgh, New York. The park offers hiking, picnicking, and fishing opportunities.
The park is named for Frances “Franny” Reese (1916-2009), who was an environmentalist and civil rights activist. Reese was born in Washington D.C., but she moved to the Hudson Valley in 1952. She became active in the local civil rights movement, and she also worked to protect the local environment. In 1966, she helped to establish the Scenic Hudson Land Trust, which works to preserve land along the Hudson River.
History
In the early 1970s, Reese began working to create a state park on Storm King Mountain. She believed that the mountain should be preserved for future generations to enjoy. After many years of effort, her dream was finally realized when Franny Reese State Park was established in 1983.
Reese continued to be involved with the park throughout her life. In 2008, she helped to create a new trail at the park. The Franny Reese Heritage Trail is a 1.5-mile (2.4 km) loop trail that provides stunning views of the Hudson River and the Catskill Mountains.
Franny Reese State Park is a beautiful place to visit all year round. In the spring, wildflowers blooms along the trails. In the fall, the leaves change color, creating a breathtaking scene. And in the winter, the park is perfect for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
