Actions to Follow After Your Basement Floods
What should you do if your basement has been flooded? It is natural to be shocked or panicked when your basement has been flooded. Therefore, it is worth preparing by thinking about what to do in the event of a flooded basement, and here are some tips to guide you through the process.
1.Shut off the power.
Before you do anything else, shut off the electrical power.
This will reduce the risk of getting an electric shock. If you can, you should also turn off the gas and your water heater to reduce the risk of damage (but only if it is safe to do so.)
2. Clear the water.
Sometimes, the flooding may not be too severe. If this is the case then you may be able to clear the water with a wet/dry vacuum or even a mop and bucket. However, in case of any contaminated water or large amounts, it is better to call in a professional. A dehumidifier is also recommended as this can reduce the humidity of the home to a healthy range (around 30% to 50%).
3. Remove items.
Once the water has been cleared, you can begin removing items such as furniture or carpets. In some cases, it may be possible to get these cleaned but it may be that they have to be replaced if they are too water damaged. Drywall may need to be removed. With electrical appliances like fridges, you should replace them if water gets into the motor, as this will likely result in electric shocks. Most important is to make sure to get the structure dry in a timely manner. You don’t want mold to grow. If using fans, make sure there is NO mold present. You don’t want to disturb the spores and blow them around to unaffected areas.
4. Wipe down surfaces.
Another major risk with flooding is how the formation of mold and mildew. Wiping down surfaces is important as this reduces the health risks that can come with living in damp conditions.
5. Get your home inspected.
Before getting back into your home it is important that is properly inspected by a certified professional. This will ensure that is safe to go back in, as well as make any recommendations to stop any further damage to the home. In more severe cases of flooding, you may also want to consult a property surveyor or electrician to check that the home is safe to go back to.
6. Talk to your insurance company.
It is essential to talk to your insurance company as soon as possible. They will be able to guide you regarding what is covered under the terms of your agreement. If you are flooded and you don’t have insurance, then it may be possible to get assistance via FEMA federal government grants or SBA loans to cover flood damage and other expenses.
