The Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center is the art museum of Vassar College, a private liberal arts college in Poughkeepsie, New York. The center is named for Mrs. Frances Lehman Loeb, who donated $1 million to Vassar in 1931 for the construction of an art museum on the campus. The building was designed by the architect Edward Larrabee Barnes and completed in 1993.
History
The Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center was founded in 1864 as the Vassar College Art Gallery. The gallery was originally housed in the main building of the college, which is now known as Main Hall. In 1931, Mrs. Frances Lehman Loeb donated $1 million for the construction of a new art museum on the Vassar campus. The new museum was designed by the architect Edward Larrabee Barnes and completed in 1993.
The collection of the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center has grown significantly since its founding in 1864. It now contains more than 18,000 works of art, ranging from antiquity to the present day. The majority of the collection is composed of Western art from the Renaissance to the twentieth century, but the museum also includes a significant amount of non-Western art, particularly from Africa, Asia, and Oceania.
Exhibits and Programs
The Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center frequently organizes exhibitions of works from its own collection as well as loans from other institutions. Recent exhibitions have included “Drawing Conclusions: Works on Paper by Contemporary Women Artists” (2015), “Precious Time: Photographs by Dorothea Lange” (2016), and “Fragile ecologies: artists and the natural world” (2017).
The museum also offers a variety of educational programs for both children and adults. These programs include gallery talks, tours, lectures, workshops, and family events.
